The OpenHouse London is one of interesting annual architectural event. This was my first time to participate this curious event. So, I chose Lloyd's Building, Roger's office, and David Chipperfield office ,which i have strong interest among the most all architectures in London, to visit during the event is held.
The Lloyd's Building, designed by Richard Rogers is massive and stately architecture that is relevant to the tradition of the U.K's high-tech architecture. The staircase ,which is isolated from the main space in order to show the clear concept of dividing infrastructure and the space, has stainless steel panel. And this symbolises it's heaviness and it's magnificence. Other inevitable infrastructures as well. Interior that we cannot see normally has special quality of atmosphere.
Interior space is filled with high-tech ornaments. Well, it was like the Cathedral of Modern Technology. Even though, i didn't feel it's too much. Because this architecture keeps it's balance of simplicity and complexity. Simplicity is found in it's planning or some detail like the glass lift, and complexity is it's high-tech ornaments. Actually ornament is inevitable infrastructure for the building function here... Therefore this architecture shows really clear concept.
The Lloyd's Building is one of the master piece. I could see essential differences between this architecture and other architectures attempt to show high- tech. In the latter case, it's just too much. But the Lloyd, this is in a different class. What we say "High-tech architecture" recent days is equal to Lloyd's Building itself.
オープンハウスロンドンは１年のある期間だけ、普段は一般開放されていない建築が公共に開放されるイベントで、今週末はそんな建築を体験できる貴重な土日。あまりに多くの建築が開放されるので、基本的に全てを拝見するのは不可能、だからその中から特にみたいと思った３つを選んだ。ロイズビル、ロジャーズ事務所、そしてデビッド・チッパーフィールド事務所。
ロイズビル、１０時に開放だが絶対に長蛇の列になるのが想像できたので、９時前にレセプションに到着、しかしもう何人も並んでいた。完成して２０年以上経つが未だに人気が有る証拠。平面図を見れば、シンプルな平面にインフラがごつごつとその周りに付属している簡潔なプラニングだという事がわかるが、外見からは全然想像できない。外見はまさに近代技術のカテドラルといった感じだ。インテリはハイテク装飾で厳つい。だがシンプルなところはシンプルだ。例えば外付けされたガラスのエレベータ、ディテールがシンプル過ぎて驚いた。プランニングも簡潔。その結果としてバランスのとれた建築となっている。だからロンドンの色んな所でみるゴツゴツ無駄の多い様に感じるハイテク建築といわれるのとは格が違う気がする。
ロイズビルディングで２時間余り過ごした後、ロジャーズオフィスへ。
