I've written about DJ.KRUSH and DJ.KENTARO's Live at KOKO before in this blog. If I substitute DJ.KENTARO with one word, i would say "hard"or"strong". He mixes sound with his physical hand technique especially by scratching. And on the other hand, like yesterday's MONOLAKE, JEFF MILLS who is the one to explore the field of Minimal Techno, i would say "soft","flexible". Comapre to DJ. KENTARO, instead, he carefully touches the delicate controls on the mixer with his fingers and eternally making slight level adjustment, rather than touching disc on the turntable. Actually, the sound we hear now and the sound we heard a few minutes ago are definitely different. But really difficult to actually perceive what is being changed by the adjustment that he is making. Of course, both are good. The former which is "hard, strong" physical type, and the latter which is "soft, flexible" intellectual type. Both are NICE.
日本人のDJ.KRUSHとDJ.KENTAROのKOKOでのライブにいってみた事は以前のブログで書いた。DJ.KENTAROを一文字で喩えるなら、、「剛」だろうか。スクラッチ等の技でレコードを物理的に操作し音楽をミックスしていく。それに対して、昨日のMONOLAKEのミニマルテクノ、その分野を切り開いたというJEFF MILLS／ジェフ・ミルズは「柔」じゃなかろうか。DJ.KRUSHもKOKOのライブではそういう印象をもった。JEFF MILLSの映像を観てみると解る事だが、ターンテーブル上のレコードに触れている時間はDJ.KENTAROと比べると非常に短い。そのかわり、デリケートなミキサーのつまみをひっきりなしに触り、微妙なレベル調整を永遠としている。何が変化しているのか始めは解らなかったが、たしかに数分後の音と、今現在を流れている音は全然異なっている。勿論甲乙つけられないのだが前者の「剛」、身体でぶつかっていくタイプと後者の「柔」、知性的な音のつながり、どちらもナイスだ。
