The 3rd day of the journey. Last night, we already made a contract with a driver and a guide to take us to the desert, so that we don't have to lose our time here today. After procuring foods and gasoline, we departed to the desert. The destination is called Chegaga desert and it takes about 5 hours of driving from here, Zagora. Along the way, we are going to stray from the route to see another desert but small. Chegaga Desert is located near from Algeria and it's part of Sahara desert. Sahara is very vast. It occupies about 1/3 of Africa..

旅行３日目。砂漠に行くためのガイドとドライバーの調達は昨日の夜の内にすませていたので、立ち往生せず朝から砂漠に向けて出発できる。食料、ガソリン等を調達し（してもらい）出発した。目的地はシェガガ砂丘というところで、ここまでは５時間ほどかかる。その途中、小さめの砂漠に寄り道する予定になっている。シェガガ砂丘はアルジェリアとの国境に近いところに広がっており、サハラ砂漠の一部である。サハラ砂漠はばかでかい。アフリカ大陸の北部、全土の３分の１もサハラ砂漠が占めているらしい。

For a while, we are driving down the plain which has nothing. We could see permanent table mountains in the distance, and mirages below the horizon. After driving down the national highway, suddenly the car entered the trackless path. Again, around us, there are nothing. Nothing except, sky, cloud, and the plain and a little plants. How many times I thought about, how could people live such environment. Even though, small village, oasis and palm tree, and nomad appeared in front of us several times. The driver had neither GPS nor a map. I asked "do you have any landmark?" But he said just "hunch".

しばらくの間、何もない平地をずっと走っている。遠くには平らなテーブルマウンテンが永遠と続き、地平線上には蜃気楼がみえる。国道をしばらく走って、突然道をそれ、道無き道を行く。とりあえず周りには更に何もなくなった。空、雲と砂礫の地面、それと地面にちょろっとした植物。あまりにも何もないので、時々出現する植物がどうしてそこに生えているのかが疑問に思えてくる。こんな所で生活している人間や動物がいるのだろうかと思うけれども、それでも時には小さな村があったり、オアシスと椰子に野生の駱駝、ロバが集まっていたり、遊牧民がぽつんと歩いていたりする。人も動物もちゃんと生活していた。行けど行けど、一向に景色は変わらない。轍もない。それなのにドライバーはＧＰＳも地図も何も持っていない。「何か目印にしている対象でもあるのか」と聞いてみたけれど基本的に「勘」で走っているという。

By running with his hunch for 2 hours. "What's that?" There slowly appeared unknown extraneous object in perfect horizon. That sight was too surreal, so that it seemed like an artificial object. Even the car is coming closer to the object but I couldn't realise (i know it is the desert but) it as a natural landscape. This experience was like as if i were intruding into an abstract painting. And this mysterious experience was the desert itself, I realised it when i stood in the centre of the desert. Once we intrude into the desert, we lost our sense of distance, location and such basic geographical senses. Especially the daytime when the sun beats down on the surface of the desert, the desert absorbs and reflects the light brilliantly, therefore we can hardly recognise which is farther or closer. "Living desert", one of nomad Berber said so. The landscape in the desert is always transforming. When I see my feet, I could catch the sand which was slightly skimmed near the surface of the ground by the wind. My footprints will disappear soon, and the hill as well. I see now, desert evoked me to meditate. Now I could have some ideas about why desert implies abundant connotation within it.

その「勘」で走ること２時間。なんだあれは。完全な地平線上に徐々に異物が現れはじめた。その光景があまりに超現実的だったので、人工的な作り物のようだった。車が近づいて徐々にその塊の全貌が明らかになっていくが、砂漠と解っていても一向にそれが砂の塊だと確認できない。抽象画の中に入り込んだようだった。そしてこの不可思議な体験が砂漠そのものだということが、到着してその真ん中に立って初めて解った。砂漠の中に入り込むと距離感、方向感覚などの基本的な地理感覚は失われてしまう。特に昼間の光がぎらぎらと照り付ける時間帯は、砂漠が光を反射してあまりにまばゆいので、それが遠い所にあるのか近い所にあるのかが理解しづらくなる。「砂漠は生きている」と原住民であるベルベル人が言っていた。観光客が言うよりも、原住民がいうと重みを感じる。砂漠のランドスケープは常にその形を変えている。確かに足下を見てみると、砂丘の表面すれすれを細かな砂が風で運ばれている。自分の足跡もいずれ消えてしまう。今登っている丘もいつか消えてしまう。砂漠の色に関しても同じだった。白、赤、茶、黄、金等写真を撮るたびに色が移り変わっている。砂漠は色んな事を思考させる。砂漠が持つ暗示的意味が豊富な理由がよくわかる。

Catching some air with a camel with one hump. Not 2 humps. With a little French girl with us. We seldom see foreigners recently. Including the girl, 3 people were on 3 camels. After that, we had lunch at nomadic house. Super delicious. The main structure of the house was wood, and was covered with clothes and textiles. Resting for a while, we left the desert to see more boundless desert.

１つこぶの駱駝に乗って散歩。２つこぶではない。フランス人の女の子も一緒もついて来た。久し振りにあった外国人だった。フランス人の女の子を含め、３人で駱駝に乗る。その後遊牧民の家でランチ。めちゃくちゃ美味しかった。遊牧民の家の主要構造は木で、そのフレームに布きれや織物が重ね合わせられて家になっている。休憩後、より遠くて大きい砂漠を目指して出発する。
